Hopeship The Einia Series Book 5 eBook Simon Lang

This good-hearted, well-paced space opera is crowded with aliens and humans, interwoven with personal conflicts and the larger cultural problems that occur when vastly different races try to live with each other. It is old school science fiction, with tight stories and clear-cut action, and the cultural diversity is handled like 1960’s civil rights, which acknowledges differences and finds common cause, instead of the current post-modern approach, which vitiates differences.

It all centers around the huge, interstellar hospital ship, the USS Hope, and the challenges the crew faces as they try to keep order amongst themselves and bring medical hope to a reluctant people. This 1994 novel, recently revised by Lang, is the fifth (and so far final) novel of the Einai series, which started with one of my all-time favorite space operas, All the Gods of Eisernon. You don’t need to read the others to read this one.

Darlene Hartman, the author’s real name, was a friend of Gene Rodenberry, and worked with him on the original Star Trek series. If you like Star Trek kind of science fiction, you’ll like this book. At one point, Rodenberry was talking about her Einai universe as being an alternative or a compliment to the Star Trek universe, and compliment it it does. I’ve heard a few reviewers complain that Hartman’s work is, in fact, too much like Star Trek. But that’s what she knew and liked and worked on. And bear in mind, The Next Generation writers borrowed back from her; Riker, for example, is the name of the first officer in All the Gods of Eisernon, a full decade before The Nest Generation.

Anyway, I find her books to be good, enjoyable science fiction yarns. There’s a general ruckus going on, and while there is a lot of diversity, there are still a lot of universal values that don’t go out of style. If you want a trip to the stars with humor and feeling, then try exploring with Hopeship.
